Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) is the waste produced when oil palm fruitlet is taken from a fresh fruit bunch during the process of palm oil production. Raw EFB is available as wet whole empty fruit bunches each weighing several kilograms, while processed (shredded) EFB is a fibrous material with fiber length of 10-20 cm and reduced moisture content of 30-50%.

Dried EFB can be directly used for combustion in thermal or power plant, however it is more recommended to process the fibres into pellet condition for higher efficiency.

  • Gross Calorific Value: 4000-4500 kcal/kg
  • Total Moisture: 10-15%
  • Ash Content: 1-3%

Carbonizing technology is also one of the solution to turn the raw EFB into a higher value product, but at this moment it is still under research & development for a practical cost at large scale.
